Dr Aga Ashraf Ali is a youngman of +90 years who exhibits the inquisitiveness of a child.He is the finest Educationist who has broken bread with greats at the National level.His autobiography which hit the stands last year gives detailed accounts of his encounters with brilliant and mighty minds of the country.He has as his legacy hundreds of teachers, scholars and admirers.His students call him the Socrates of this age .We had the rare honor of his visit to our home the other day.Besides his brilliant articulation and the depth of his wisdom ,what struck me was the inquisitiveness he shows in anything that comes his way .This perhaps is the basic instinct of a thinker.Unless the mind is trained to question and tuned to understand ,no intellectual pursuit can be of any value.It is a pity that our entire system of education at all levels is in a mess.The Government schools are the worst as year after year we see schools from where no student crosses the matriculation barrier.All this when we had Educationists of the caliber of Dr Aga Ashraf Ali.What went wrong and continues to go wrong ?The answers are not hard to find.Every institution came to be populated and managed by pygmies .Sharks took over and ruled the waters.Education is not in the hands of Educationists .An expert like Aga saheb is nowhere in the decision making.Decisions are made on the basis of political expediency. Sycophancy carries a premium and mediocrity has an allowance.People like Aga saheb do not belong here.
